My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in 2002 and really enjoyed it. When the room didn't look like the web picture, they upgraded us (since then all the rooms have been done over). When we went back to Paris in 2005 we tried a new section of the city and different hotel and did not like it. We took the Metro to the Hotel Tryp de Saxe and they booked us for the rest of our stay. We only speak French from our high school courses (20 years ago) so the idea of booking a hotel live was nerve wracking, but it was the easiest experience and we again got a great room. They are so helpful and friendly. The breakfast is great and most of the staff speaks English very well (especially the front desk staff.) The area in the 7th is upscale and quiet and you can walk home from the Eiffel Tower at night. It feels very safe. In the summer there is an outdoor flea market across the street. About a 2 minute walk to metro and 30 second walk to an excellant Tabac for the best and cheapes (2 Euro) cafe au lait! The Hotel Tryp de Saxe is well worth the stay just for the awesome location, great staff, and the comfort-- at any price. The fact that it's affordable makes it a real gem in Paris. I think of it as my home in Paris, and will not make the mistake of booking a different hotel again.
Often times the beds are doubles that they push together, but that happens most places in Europe and can be tolerated. My husband and I had trouble closing the shower door so that the water wouldn't leak out, but then again, we could see the Eiffel Tower from the bathroom window. I wouldn't consider either of this things a surprise or a big deal at all.
